Our name comes from that simple idea — the folk who give a place its heart and soul.

Chef Jay Kumar, Owner of FOLK and LORE in Park Slop Brooklyn

Jay Kumar

Born in Mangalore, India, Chef and Owner Jay Kumar discovered his passion for cooking at a young age. Driven by this growing interest, he moved to Switzerland, where he established and expanded his restaurant business, earning a name for himself in the local community.

After 20 years of building a strong reputation in Switzerland, Chef Jay followed his heart to Brooklyn New York, settling in Park Slope, where he founded LORE— a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand winner in 2024 and 2025. 

Where LORE tells the stories of intersecting cultures, experiences, and flavors, FOLK focuses on the narratives of the people who have shaped the neighborhood and Chef Jay’s life in Brooklyn.
